Jonathan Chism

Hope For Three is honored to introduce our December Autism Superhero, Jonathan Chism Sr.

Jonathan is an incredible father to his son, Jonathan (Jay) Chism Jr. When asked what word his loved ones would use to describe him, he said “gracious.” Jonathan works hard to be patient, understanding, and empathetic with Jay. His goal is to ensure that Jay knows his family loves him unconditionally and will always offer support. Jonathan celebrates Jay’s big and small accomplishments, encouraging him to be kind to himself, especially during times of struggle or when things don’t go as planned.

Jonathan recalls the first years following Jay’s autism diagnosis as challenging. He admits that he initially struggled to accept his son’s neurodiversity. However, as he learned more about autism, Jonathan embraced this new journey and developed a deep appreciation for human differences. Jay’s autism has profoundly shaped how Jonathan views life, influencing both his ministerial and academic pursuits. In 2021, Jonathan co-founded the Autism Dads Social Club, an initiative to support other fathers raising children on the spectrum.

The Autism Dads Social Club hosts monthly events for male caregivers to come together, connect, and bond. They also occasionally organize family-focused events, where all members of the family can gather and enjoy time with other families. Jonathan shares that it has been a joy to meet and connect with other parents and families who have autistic loved ones. He finds it uplifting to be part of the autism community and to know that many other families are navigating similar experiences, challenges, and joys.

Jonathan is a superhero not only for his son Jay but also for the community of male caregivers. His dedication, support, and compassion make him a true champion for his family and others on this journey.
